Be clear about why you are here, because the usual reason people assume is wrong. Windows opens GIFs perfectly well — Paint, Photos, and File Explorer have handled them for decades. What refuses your GIF is a specific program, and converting to BMP is how you satisfy it:
- Legacy Win32 applications: in-house line-of-business tools, older utilities, and anything that reads pixels through the plain Win32 imaging calls will take a 24-bit BMP without complaint. Many were compiled before anyone cared about reading a GIF.
- Machine vision and instrument software: lab, medical, and industrial inspection packages standardise on BMP because a frame is a header followed by raw pixels — no decoder, no library, no surprises.
- Embedded systems and microcontrollers: there is nothing to decompress, so a bitmap can be streamed straight to a display. A GIF would need an LZW decoder and a frame buffer first.
- Pixel-exact editing: BMP holds uncompressed pixels, so an editor can open, change, and re-save it as many times as you like with no generation loss.

GIF vs BMP File Size Comparison
A BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so its size depends on the image's dimensions and nothing else — not the subject, not the detail, not how many colours the GIF used. The bitmaps this tool writes are 24-bit, which is three bytes per pixel plus a 54-byte header and a few bytes of row padding:

Those figures are arithmetic, not estimates. The GIF side is the part that varies, and it varies enormously — which is why the conversion can multiply your file size by three hundred or divide it by two. We measured four real GIFs through this page's own converter:

Three things fall out of that table. A flat-colour logoexplodes, because GIF's compression is superb at long runs of identical pixels and a bitmap writes every one of them out at three bytes. A dithered photographgrows only 4.4×, because dithering scatters per-pixel noise that GIF's compression can barely touch — the GIF was already inefficient.
And an animated GIF actually gets smaller, which is not the bargain it looks like. The bitmap is not more efficient than the GIF; it is storing one frame where the GIF stored twenty-four. You did not save half a megabyte, you threw away twenty-three frames. If that is what you wanted, fine — otherwise see the next section.
Transparency and Animation
Two things a GIF can do that a BMP cannot, both worth knowing before you convert. GIF supports binary transparency — one palette entry is marked transparent, so a pixel is either fully see-through or fully opaque. The bitmap written here is 24-bit: three channels, no alpha channel. Every transparent pixel comes out solid white. There is at least no partial blending to worry about, as there would be with a PNG or WebP, but a sticker meant for a coloured background will arrive in a white box. If the transparency matters, convert to PNG instead.
GIF can also hold an animation, a sequence of frames with their own delays. BMP stores exactly one still image, so converting an animated GIF hands you its first frame and discards the rest — that is the target format's limitation, not the converter's. To keep the motion, use GIF to WebP or GIF to AVIF, both of which carry every frame across.
Compatibility Notes for Windows Workflows
BMP is the native Windows bitmap format, and the file this tool produces is deliberately the most conservative variant of it: a 24-bit, uncompressed BI_RGB bitmap with a 40-byte BITMAPINFOHEADER and bottom-up row order. That is the layout Windows has read since version 3.0 in 1990. There is no colour table, no run-length encoding, and no BITMAPV5 colour-space block for an older reader to choke on. If a program accepts BMP at all, it accepts this one.
Four practical notes for anyone feeding these files into a Windows toolchain:
- No alpha channel. 24-bit BI_RGB has nowhere to put transparency, and Windows resource pipelines that need it — icons and cursors, chiefly — want a 32-bit BGRA image instead. If you are building an icon, target ICO rather than BMP.
- The header says 72 DPI. A GIF carries no meaningful print resolution to preserve, so the bitmap records 72 DPI (2,835 pixels per metre). DPI is only a note about intended physical size and changes no pixels — set the real output resolution in whatever application does the printing.
- It is sRGB, with no embedded profile. BMP has no colour management to speak of, which is exactly why colour-critical print work uses TIFF instead.
- Watch the size on a network share. A folder of bitmaps is a folder of full-size, uncompressed files. Ten 12-megapixel images come to roughly 350 MB.
Going the other way is just as easy when the legacy step is done with: BMP to PNG compresses the same pixels losslessly, and BMP to JPG produces something small enough to email.
